Elizabeth Bay House – Colonial Splendour
Can’t afford your dream house? Neither could Colonial Secretary, Alexander Macleay. He had the vision to develop the site from 1826 onwards as a fine landscape garden and build Elizabeth Bay House. Despite Macleay’s financial predicaments, one can’t help but admire his vision. The breathtaking elegance of the domed saloon and ’geometric’ staircase makes this one of Sydney’s finest houses. Then there’s the magnificent harbour view….

Convict Sydney at Hyde Park Barracks
All kinds of crimes could get you a job on Macquarie Street …Learn about the forced transportation of convicts, their daily lives and how they built the colony. Wander the streets of 1820s Sydney on our giant map, try on a set of leg-irons, lie in a convict hammock, look for your relatives on the convict database, and discover the intriguing stories of some of the 50,000 convicts who passed through the barracks doors between 1819 and 1848. Hyde Park Barracks is a World Heritage site.

Fort Denison - Colonial Sydney
Prior to European settlement, the island had the name Mat-te-wan-ye, from the Aboriginal people called Eora.… then the First Fleet arrived in 1788 and changed the name to Rock Island….The same year a convict name Thomas Hill was sentenced for a week in irons on Rock Island, with only bread and water. Come explore and marvel at what is now known as Fort Denison, located in the middle of Sydney Harbour – the view is amazing.
